History of Computer Operating System

operating system generationThe operating system is a liaison between users of computers with computer hardware. Before operating system, people just use the computer by using analog signals and digital signals. Along with the development of knowledge and technology, at this moment there are a variety of operating systems with the advantages of each. To better understand the operating system then you should have known in advance some basic concepts of the operating system itself. Understanding the general operating system is managing all the resources contained on computer systems and provides a set of services (system calls) to the user, making it easier and freshen up the use and utilization of resources computer system.

Computer system basically consists of four main components, namely hardware, application programs, operating systems, and users. Operating system functions to regulate and supervise the use of various hardware and application programs for users. Operating system functions like a government in a country, in the sense of making the conditions so that computers can run the program correctly. To avoid conflicts that occur when users use the resources the same, the operating system manage which users can access a resource. The operating system is also often called resource allocator.Salah one important function of the operating system is a control program that aims to avoid the mistake (error) and the use of computer unnecessary.
According to Tanenbaum, the operating system experienced a very rapid development, which can be divided into four generations:

First generation (1945-1955)
The first generation was the beginning of the development of electronic computing system as a replacement for mechanical computing system, it caused people to calculate the speed is limited and people is very easy to make a faux pas, mistakes and even mistakes. In this generation there is no operating system, the computer system was instructed to do directly.

Second Generation (1955-1965)
The second generation introduced a Batch Processing System, the Job is done in a series, and then executed sequentially. In this generation of computer systems not equipped with operating systems, but some functions of the existing operating system, for example, is the operating system functions and IBSYS FMS.

Third Generation (1965-1980)
In this generation the development of operating systems developed to serve many users at once, where the user interactively communicate through an online terminal to the computer, the operating system into a multi-user (used by many users at once) and multi-programming (serving many programs at once).

Fourth Generation (after 1980)
Today, the operating system used for computer networks where users aware of yangsaling computers connected to each other. At this time our users have also been reassured by the graphical user interface interface-based computer graphics is very comfortable, at this period also began the era of computing where computing spread-centered computing is no longer in one spot, but split in many computer that achieved better performance well.
